A Neighborhood in Transition
All the photos in this gallery were taken on August 16, 2016 and show South 5th Street, a section of the 253-acre Callowhill Historic District in Reading, PA. The name of the district comes from William Penn's second wife, Hannah Callowhill. Two of their sons created the layout of the city of Reading in 1748.. I attempted to reflect visually the sense of an historic neighborhood in long-term transition, with all the economic and cultural challenges inherent in renovation and restoration.
This collection is dedicated to my dear friend, Emily Day; without her indulgence and patience these images wouldn't exist. I'd also like to thank the community members we met who freely shared their projects, thoughts, and hopes with us.
